If your driver’s license has been suspended due to a DUI, Physical Control conviction, or another alcohol- or drug-related offense, you may still be able to drive legally by applying for an Ignition Interlock License (IIL). This license allows you to drive while your regular license is suspended, provided you comply with specific conditions.

At Knauss Law, we’ve guided countless clients through the Ignition Interlock process, ensuring they can maintain their ability to drive safely and legally. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for an IIL in Washington.

Who Is Eligible for an Ignition Interlock License?

To qualify for an IIL in Washington, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Suspension Reasons: Your license is suspended due to:
    • DUI
    • Physical Control
    • Vehicular Assault (involving drugs or alcohol)
    • Vehicular Homicide (involving drugs or alcohol)
    • Administrative suspension from a Department of Licensing (DOL) hearing.
  • License Status: You hold a valid Washington State driver’s license, or you’ve applied and passed the testing required for a new license.

Who Is Not Eligible for an Ignition Interlock License?

Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for an IIL. You are ineligible if:

  • Your suspension is for a Minor in Possession violation.
  • Your suspension is for Driving While Suspended in the First Degree.
  • You hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and want to drive commercial vehicles.
  • You are not a Washington State resident and not active-duty military.

How to Apply for an Ignition Interlock License in Washington State

Follow these steps to apply for an Ignition Interlock License:

1. Install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID):

  • Have an approved ignition interlock device installed in any vehicle you intend to drive.
  • Obtain proof of installation from the service provider or ensure they send it directly to the Department of Licensing.

2. Obtain SR-22 Insurance:

  • Secure proof of financial responsibility by purchasing an SR-22 insurance policy from your insurance company.

3. Complete the Application:

  • You can do this online at: https://secure.dol.wa.gov/home/. This brings you to the DOL’s license eXpress site. Be sure to include all the supporting documentation.

When Will My Ignition Interlock License Be Approved?

Once your application is processed and approved, your Ignition Interlock License will be issued as soon as:

  • Your license suspension begins, or
  • The Department of Licensing processes your application, whichever occurs later.

Driving a Company Vehicle While Using an IIL

If your job requires you to drive a company vehicle that does not require a CDL, the rules can vary:

  • Employer-Owned Vehicles: Any vehicle owned, rented, or leased by your employer must have an ignition interlock device installed.
  • Exemptions for Work Vehicles:
    • You can apply for a work exemption by having your employer complete an Employer Declaration for Ignition Interlock Exemption Form.
  • Carry a copy of this form whenever you drive for work purposes.

How Much Does an Ignition Interlock License Cost?

The costs associated with obtaining and maintaining an IIL include:

1. Application Fee: $100 (subject to change).

2. Ignition Interlock Device Costs:

  • Monthly leasing fees: roughly $100 but subject to change.
  • Installation and removal costs.

3. SR-22 Insurance Premiums: Monthly fees vary by provider.

4. IID Revolving Account Fee: $20 per month (subject to change).

Financial Assistance for Ignition Interlock Costs

If the costs of installing, leasing, and maintaining the device create a financial burden, you may qualify for assistance. To apply, submit the Ignition Interlock Device Financial Application to the Department of Licensing. Eligibility is determined based on income and financial circumstances.
